Ghana's African Games: Balancing Legacy Amid Economic Challenges

Ghana's hosting of the 13th African Games has sparked controversy due to the significant financial investment amidst economic challenges, raising questions about national priorities.

With nearly $250 million allocated to the multi-sport event, critics argue that the expenditure is misplaced given the country's economic woes, including high debt, inflation rates, and regional cost of living crises.

Opposition voices, such as MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, question the government's decision to prioritize the Games over pressing economic concerns, labeling it as excessive spending on non-essential ventures.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, however, defends the hosting of the Games, emphasizing the long-term benefits and legacy it will bring to Ghana beyond current economic difficulties.

Despite initial setbacks, including power outages during competitions and logistical challenges such as delayed installation of volleyball nets and reports of the cycling team purchasing new bikes, the event proceeds with over 5,000 athletes participating in 29 disciplines.

While criticism persists over the financial strain of hosting the Games, proponents highlight the potential for sporting infrastructure development and national pride as enduring legacies of the event.
